Course Assignment: Elements of Persuasion Project
Designed by: Ebony Beckham, M.Ed.
In the Spring of 2023, I taught an English 9 class to a group of 25 8th grade students at Metro Early College High School.
During our Argumentation unit, we focused a bit on persuasive speech which included the study of 8 of the most common logical fallacies used in persuasive writing and media.
As a way to assess students' understanding of logical fallacies, I introduced a short media-focused project. This project asked students to select a contemporary advertisement (within the last 15 years) that was geared towards their generation (Gen Z or Gen Alpha) and evaluate the impact that persuasive elements (logical fallacies) had on the way that audiences consumed information.
This is the graphic organizer that they used to complete their work.
After completing the above organizer, students worked to create responses that documented their analysis in the form of videos, podcasts, and news broadcasts.
Here is the rubric that I used to assess their work.
